Common reasons to use functional nutrition is to utilize custom lab testing that offers comprehensive nutritional analysis, stool testing to identify causes of gas and bloating, organic acids and the upstream and downstream systems that connect, mitochondrial deficiency / chronic fatigue, environmental toxins, and heavy metal illness.

- Identify triggers of overeating, undereating, or restrictive eating (if applicable)
- Review biochemical lab results (e.g. lipid panel, complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, hormone panels, Vitamin D, inflammatory markers, blood sugar markers)
- Recommendations for additional labs: Most lab fees are paid directly to the lab providing the test. Coverage or discounts through health insurance vary per test.
- Review training log (Training Peaks)
- Review data from other technology (Apple Watch, FitBit, Garmin)
- Review body composition results (iDXA, InBody)

- Meal plan outlining total calories, macronutrient percentages, energy expenditure (estimated)
- Progress through various elimination diets to determine what works. For example: FODMAP, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, HFLC, Paleo, Ketogenic. (if applicable)
